Manual Import of folder with active files

When I manual import my hand history folder for full tilt, and there are some active files (open tables) in there, the import speeds drop to 20-40h/s from 300h/s I normally get for manual import. Is this expected ?

It shouldn't really make a difference unless having two processes accessing the same file is causing the I/O to be slower. What happens if you close the tables once the slowdowns start?
