PT3 on Mac, won't go to Sleep

Postby reiddecardes » Thu May 02, 2013 8:53 am

I had this problem before, a few years ago, and the only way it went away was to rebuild my MacBook Pro. The other day I started playing poker again and installed PT3 ver. 3.14.4 for Mac and the problem has reappeared. I installed it with the defaults and I allowed the installer to instal Postgre SQL 9.0. with all default settings.

The problem is that the MacBook Pro will not go to sleep with the Energy Saver settings. I can force the Mac to sleep by selecting Sleep under the Apple menu or by closing the lid. I quit PT3 when I am done playing and I can reboot and the problem will still happen.

This did not happen before I installed PT3 and Postgre SQL. As I said, I had the problem a few years ago and the only way I could solve it was by wiping my hard drive and reinstalling my programs other than PT3. I have not installed any other programs since I installed PT3.

This is killing my battery if I rely on the Energy Saver Settings.

If PT3 is closed there's nothing it could be doing to affect this. However it's possible that PostgreSQL is doing things which is keeping the Mac from sleeping. Which version of PostgreSQL do you have installed on your machine?

I think it's postgre too because when I look at Activity Monitor I see postgres processes running. I was unable to Quit the processes.

The application folder is titled PostgreSQL 9.0. When I open pgAdmin3 and look at About I get Version 1.12.3

Ok, to stop PostgreSQL you have to run the following command in Utilities -> Terminal:
sudo launchctl stop com.edb.launchd.postgresql-9.0
then put in your Mac password and hit enter. That will stop PostgreSQL 9.0 on the Mac.

Also, please make sure you've got your Mac totally up to date. Our head Mac developer has tested this on his machines and cannot reproduce this problem.

I did a software update check, the one under the apple menu, and all my software is up to date.

I entered the command line that you wrote. That did not solve it. I then checked activity monitor and noticed that there were 3 postgres processes running. I was able to quit those. Before entering the stop command I saw a lot of postgres processes and was unable to quit them. This time I could quit the 3 I saw. I then tested to saw if it would sleep automatically and now it would.

So it definitely points to postgreSQL. Other than entering the command an quitting the processes, any suggestions?

Send us the last few log files in the /Library/PostgreSQL/9.0/data/pg_log folder via our support system and we'll take a look for anything particularly noteworthy there, though with the default logging setup it may not be necessarily certain what the cause is right away. Either way, it's a start.

I uploaded log files. Since stopping postgresql I cannot run PT3 with my database even though I rebooted and I see postgres processes running.
