Re-installing PT2 after installing PT3/Postgres 8.3 New PC

Long story short: I was running PT2 with postgres 8.0 on XP. Motherboard died on startup last Thursday. I bought a new PC w/Vista home premium and installed the old drive. I decided to install PT3 (beta 15) with postgres 8.3 rather than PT2 (a mistake?). I want to get my current PT2 DB (and older ones) on PT3 during this trial period using the PT3 DB maintenance guide. However, Convert doesn't show any PT2 DBs. Apparently I must reinstall PT2, get it work with postgres 8.3, then restore my old DBs in PT2.

How do I get PT2 to work with postgres 8.3? I tried the link in the attached thread but I can't find the application stack builder in the run menu under postgres 8.3 to install OBDC drivers. Whiterider refers me to this forum for help.

Thanks,
mudpi

Looks too complicated for my simple skills. I tried the install as a program, no stack build. Next I tried as a service, error with username, or password. Since I don't really know what I'm doing, I'm stuck.

Before you go any further, you said you had the old hard drive. Did you make any backups of your PostgreSQL database (using the Utilities > PostgreSQL Database Functions window) before this problem or is all you have the PostgreSQL data files that were saved on this old hard drive? Because if you hadn't made any backups then you aren't going to be able to just install 8.3 and expect it to work since the old db's were 8.0.

Yes, I regularly back up. The last was a few days before the PC died so I have a couple thousand new hands left on the DB I would like to recover. Oh, I had thought they would be backward compatible. I should have posted to this forum before going straight to PT3 on the new system. Well, I appreciate any help you can give me to recover 3 years of my results.

Thanks,

The only way to try to recover the databases without a backup is to reinstall PostgreSQL 8.0.

You can download it here
http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/downloa ... 8.0.15.zip

Extract all the files from the zip file and run the MSI installer to install 8.0 again. If you are on Vista, you need to disable the UAC first (if you don't know how to do that then see here - archives/PT2/viewtopic.php?t=18425 )

When you run the installer, one of the first windows gives you an option to select the "Data Directory". Click on that and point it to the ..program files\postgresql\8.0\data folder on your old hard drive.

Then when you get to the window during the install that says "Initialize database cluster" at the top left corner, UNCHECK that box and this will force it to try to use the old 8.0 data folder so you can recover those databases.

Thanks Pat. I had to change the service acct name from postgres to postgres2. After that I had no errors and I assume it is using my old Data folder. What next? Do I now install PT2?

Install PT2, use the online support system to send the new product ID so you can get a code.
https://www.pokertracker.com/support/?cat_id=4

Then open the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window and setup your PostgreSQL settings there.

Once you do that, go to the File > Maintain Database Names window, click the Add button, enter a description, and in the last field choose "Select existing PostgreSQL database" from the list and you should see your old PostgreSQL database to select from. Once that's setup for PT2, PT3 should be able to recognize it.

Got the code installed. Setup postgresql the same name, password and port 5433 with OBDC entry PostgreSQL and encoding UNICODE. I hope that's right. Now I get an error unable to connect to port 5433 when trying to connect to the DB. I made sure Postgres 8.0 was running and tried again, but same port error. Postgres 8.3 is using port 5432 so was I right to use 5433?

The ODBC Entry should be PostgreSQL Unicode.

5433 was correct to use for 8.0.

Go to the Start > All Programs > PostgeSQL 8.0 > pgAdmin III window.
Right-click on the red X near the top left part of the window and select Connect from the popup menu.
Enter your password.
Does it connect now or give an error? If it errors, what is the text of that error?
